UK

A body has been recovered in the search for a 16-year-old boy, believed to have got into difficulty while swimming in a lake on the hottest day of the year so far.

Police were called to Burnside Lakes in the Cambridgeshire suburb of Cherry Hinton at 5.26pm on Monday over concerns for a teenager in the water.

Cambridgeshire Police said specialist teams attended and a body was recovered at about 1pm on Tuesday.

A spokesman said: “It is believed the boy, who is 16 and from the Essex area, was swimming in the lake with a group of friends when he got into difficulty.

“Search teams recovered a body from the lake at about 1pm on Tuesday. While formal identification is yet to take place, it is believed to be that of the missing boy.”

The force said that the boy’s family is aware.

Just a day earlier, on Sunday evening, a two-year-old boy died after being pulled from a canal in Wolverhampton.

The toddler was found in water near the canal towpath in Hendon Avenue, Ettingshall, after police were called at 5.30pm.

That incident followed the discovery of a 33-year-old man’s body on 6 August in a river in Coventry.

Ahead of a sunny spell last month, swimmers were warned of the dangers of open water.

Sam Hughes, water safety manager at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, said: “We’re reminding people to head for a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.

“If you do find yourself in difficulty, remember float to live: tilt your head back with ears submerged and try to relax and control your breathing.

“Use your hands to help you stay afloat and then, once you are through the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety if you can.”
