Football manager steps in after ‘young kid’ tackled by steward

UK

Brendan Rodgers forced security guards away from a young pitch invader after Celtic’s 3-0 win over Livingston.

The excited fan dashed onto the pitch at the Tony Macaroni Stadium after full time prompting a group of security guards to intervene.

He was knocked to the ground in the kerfuffle which ensued on the pitch, but the Celtic boss was quick to come to his aid.

Rodgers ushered the stewards away, physically pushing one, before putting his arm around the youth and escorting him back towards the away end to rapturous applause from the visiting fans.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the incident, the former Liverpool and Leicester manager said: “The wee guy at the end, it’s just common sense.

“He’s a young kid on to see his heroes.

“He shouldn’t be punished or prosecuted for that, especially when the security guys are a lot older than him.

“He just wants to see his heroes, common sense, and let him back with his mates.”

However, the game was not without incident, with former England goalkeeper Joe Hart seeing red for the first time in his career for taking out Livingston’s Mo Sangare just outside the area 28 minutes into the match.

But Celtic were able to see the game out to a 3-0 victory, despite being down to ten men, with goals from Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Daizen Maeda.
