Police continue to negotiate with ‘armed’ man in ‘challenging’ operation

UK

Police continue to negotiate with a man barricaded in a flat in Sheffield who allegedly has weapons.

Officers were first called to a block of flats in Broad Street at around 7pm on Monday to deal with a man said to be “a risk to himself”.

Residents were evacuated and spent Monday night at a sports centre, while nearby main roads were closed.

Major roads nearby have now been reopened and public transport has resumed as police reduced their cordon overnight on Wednesday.

“Although roads have re-opened, our work to negotiate with the man continues,” South Yorkshire Police said in a statement.

“Officers continue to work with residents to ensure that any pets within the building are cared for and reunited where possible.

“We continue to thank you for your on-going support and co-operation during this challenging time.”

The Sheffield Star reported that thousands of commuters were affected by road closures on Tuesday morning, with some spending three hours trying to get to work.
