Tesla confirms starting production of new Model Y at Gigafactory Berlin

Tesla has confirmed that it is starting production of the new Model Y with a refreshed design at Gigafactory Berlin, but it hasn’t yet opened orders for it.

Last week, Tesla unveiled the new Model Y in China and started taking orders in the country and a few other markets that Tesla supplies with its Gigafactory Shanghai.

The vehicle was not yet available to order in Europe and North America despite Tesla also producing the Model Y in Germany and the US.

Now, Tesla has confirmed that it started production of the new Model Y at Gigafactory Berlin.

However, unlike in China, Tesla hasn’t opened orders for the new Model Y and still sells the older version on its website:

In Germany, Tesla currently sells the Model Y from €44,990 to €54,990 and the new version is expected to be a little more expensive at the beginning.

Tesla’s sales in Germany were down 41% in 2024 compared to 2023 and down 10% in Europe.

Considering that Model Y accounts for most of Tesla’s European sales, the updated version is expected to help.

Electrek’s Take

It’s not too surprising that the new Model Y is not available to order yet despite Tesla confirming the start of production.

Tesla is believed to have started production at Gigafactory Shanghai a few weeks ago before starting orders.

Likely something similar is going to happen in Europe, but Tesla is going to have to make the switch as smooth as possible because any slow down of Model Y deliveries would greatly impact the company since the program now accounts for a majority of its sales.
