Volkswagen ID.7 launch delayed in the US: Here’s when we could see the new flagship EV

Volkswagen’s flagship electric sedan, the ID. 7, will not launch in the US this year as expected. Even though EV sales are slipping in the US, the ID.7 will not arrive until at least 2025.

The ID.7 is already sold in Europe and China, but US buyers will have to wait (at least) a little longer.

In May, Volkswagen delayed the ID.7 launch indefinitely in the US. The company said the move was because of changing market conditions without giving a specific date for the planned introduction.

Although a launch date had not been announced, the ID.7 was expected to be released in the US later this year as a 2025 model year.

Some Volkswagen dealers are weary of the new EV sedan. The ID.7 has been a big topic during recent meetings, according to John Luciano, a VW Nation Dealer Advisory Council member and owner of Street Volkswagen in Texas.

“We brought up a little bit of caution behind it,” Luciano said earlier this year (via Automotive News).

When will Volkswagen launch the ID.7 in the US?

Although specific prices have not been revealed, Luciano said it’s “definitely a $50,000 to $60,000 car, without incentives.” He added, “Is there any chance of it being competitive?” Some feel it may now be.

At 195.3″ long, 73.3″ wide, and 60.5″ tall, VW’s ID.7 is about the size of the discontinued Passat (194″ long x 73″ wide x 59″ tall).

A big reason dealers are cautious about VW’s new EV is America’s growing preference for larger trucks and SUVs. With prices expected to start at above $50,000, the electric sedan faces stiff competition from luxury rivals.

Although the ID.7 launch was delayed indefinitely, we could still see the flagship electric sedan in the US by the end of 2025.

According to Volkswagen Group of America CEO Pablo Di Si, the ID.7 could still hit the US market as soon as 2025 (via Automotive News). VW’s leader said the ID.7 will “probably” launch in 2025, depending on demand.

The ID.7 was initially expected to launch in the second half of 2024. Volkswagen’s decision comes despite sales of its sole EV, the ID.4, slipping 58% in Q3 from last year.

In March, we learned the ID.7 will be available in Pro S and Pro S Plus trim options. Both variants will be offered with RWD and 4MOTION AWD powertrains. In Europe, the ID.7 starts at around $60,000 (55,000 euros) and has a WLTP range of up to 435 miles (702 km).

With the electric ID.Buzz minibus arriving in the US this fall, Volkswagen will likely see an uptick in EV sales. Will the ID.7 join it next year?
