A body was found in a river in Lincolnshire on Friday during a search for a missing schoolboy, police have said.

The teenager, named by police only as Oliwier, 15, was last seen near the bank of the River Trent at The Flood Road bridge in Gainsborough late on Monday evening.

Police mounted a “round-the-clock effort” over the subsequent three days to find him.

Officers said they had searched abandoned buildings along the river as well as nearby footpaths, undergrowth and farmers’ fields.

They also spoke to Oliwier’s family, friends and school, and reviewed CCTV footage and social media accounts.

However, a body was recovered from the water by police searching a stretch of the Trent in Gainsborough – around 300 metres away from the Flood Road bridge in the town.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “We are saddened to report that this afternoon we have recovered a body.

“No formal identification has yet been carried out, so we are unable to confirm that it is Oliwier at this time.”

The death is currently being treated as unexplained and the force said it is liaising with the coroner.

Oliwier’s family have been informed of the latest developments.

The statement added: “Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times. We ask that their privacy is respected.”
