An officer has been charged in connection with the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a marked police van.

Margaret McCarron, previously Borland, was fatally injured after being hit in Motherwell’s Merry Street on 19 September 2021.

The 58-year-old, from the North Lanarkshire town, was taken to University Hospital Wishaw but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police Scotland stated at the time neither of the officers within the marked Ford Transit were injured.

The force’s Road Policing Unit launched a probe into the incident. The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) was also instructed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to investigate.

A 30-year-old officer has now been charged in connection with the crash, the police watchdog confirmed.

A PIRC spokesperson said: “We were instructed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to investigate the death of Margaret McCarron in Motherwell on 19 September 2021, when she received fatal injuries after being struck by a police vehicle.
