A police officer has been shot in Omagh in Northern Ireland, security sources have told Sky News.

The officer has been taken to hospital after being shot in Killyclogher Road in the County Tyrone town.

The shooting has taken place on the same road where dissident republicans carried out the Omagh bombing on 15 August 1998.

The car bombing was the worst single atrocity of the Troubles and left 29 people dead.

Reports have suggested the police officer who was shot this evening was off duty at the time of the attack.
